Planning amendment approved: Wittenburg compressor station enters construction phase

New compressor capacity secures gas flows from west to east. Approval process successfully completed.

Kassel/Wittenburg. The planning amendment for the construction and operation of the Wittenburg compressor station, including ancillary facilities, has been granted by the Stralsund Mining Authority. NEL Gastransport GmbH has thus reached a decisive milestone for the construction project. The existing planning approval decision for the North European Gas Pipeline (NEL) has been officially extended to include the construction and operation of the compressor station. The way is now clear to begin preparatory construction work shortly, as planned.

The new compressor station is being built in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania near Bobzin, east of the L04 road, not far from Wittenburg. It is a key component in the targeted strengthening of the NEL’s transport capacities as an important east-west axis. It thus makes a significant contribution to the secure and reliable supply of natural gas in eastern Germany and south-eastern Europe. To ensure security of supply, the Gas Network Development Plan provides for the construction of the Wittenburg compressor station. Three compressor units are required at the site to increase capacity.

“With the supplementary planning decision, we can now move swiftly into the construction phase. Together with a modern facility design and extensive compensation measures, we are ensuring that the future compressor station will be operated efficiently and in an environmentally sustainable manner,” explains Christoph von dem Bussche, Managing Director of NEL Gastransport GmbH.

The compressor station is scheduled to be fully completed and commissioned in autumn 2028.
